New York -- The Special Representative reiterates the recommendation by the Secretary-General in his latest annual report on children and armed conflict (S/2007/757), namely that equal weight should be given to all categories of grave violations against children. It is also necessary to recognize that the range of violations and abuses committed against children in armed conflict goes beyond the six categories of violations being considered in the framework of the Security Council.

The present report, which has been prepared pursuant to Security Council resolution 1612 (2005), is presented to the Council and its Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict as the first country report on the situation of childrenand armed conflict in Afghanistan. The report covers the period from 1 July 2007 to 15 August 2008.

NEW YORK, 20 November 2008 – As the world commemorates Universal Children’s Day, UNICEF today welcomes the launch of a new group that aims to amplify the voice of those suffering as a result of conflict.
The group has been established by young people with first-hand experience of the hardship children face in conflict zones.
The new network, led by UNICEF Advocate Ishmael Beah, will be launched today at a press conference at the United Nations in New York, hosted by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, and UNICEF.
